THEME PARKS come in two types--Disney and everything else. Lumping Disney with its competitors is like comparing Cinderella's Castle with Barbie's dollhouse. It's Goofy to try. Not only is Orlando's Walt Disney World larger than any other theme park--the massive complex is about the same size as San Francisco--it's also more diverse. With parades, fireworks, and live performances, Disney takes entertainment to a level most parks can't hope to attain. If you want to splurge on one blowout family vacation, don't Mickey Mouse around. Head for Disney World in Florida.

A lot has changed since Disney World opened in October 1971. Two theme parks have been added--Epcot Center and Disney-MGM Studios--plus a pair of water parks and a nightclub getaway. One of the best recent innovations is a trio of affordable hotels. At the Caribbean Beach Resort, Port Orleans, and Dixie Landings--scheduled to open in February--room rates run $85-$104 a day, compared with $190-$200 for other Disney hotels. And, to celebrate its 20th anniversary, Disney World has unveiled new daytime and evening parades, shows, and other attractions.

The parks.
